These services are generally performed after the first thinning of a stand up to the stand being harvested and replanted. These services are designed to reduce competition and reduce fire hazard within a stand.

Understory burning

A prescribed fire performed under a forest canopy to reduce competition of unwanted vegetation, reduce fuel loads, control disease and/or improve wildlife habitat, all without negatively affecting the overstory trees. Understory burning can be performed year-round depending on weather conditions and specific goals of the burn.

Understory spraying

Application of herbicides underneath a forest canopy to reduce competition from unwanted vegetation, generally performed using a skidder with a spray rig mounted on the back. Understory spraying generally occurs between July 15 and October 31.
