Justin Penick, Founder, President, & CEO

Mr. Penick began buying and selling timber as a forestry student at Texas A&M University.  He founded Acorn Forestry, Inc. in 1999 and has successfully grown the company from a startup to a nationally recognized forestry services organization with a focus on innovative solutions and operational excellence.  He provides strategic direction and vision for the company and leads all operational and business activities.  Since establishing the business, Justin has personally performed every service delivered by the company, well over 1 million acres of forest management and reforestation.  This hands-on experience has given him expert knowledge and a unique aptitude for recognizing operational opportunities and creating innovative land management solutions. 

He was instrumental in developing professional and operational criteria for state level prescribed burn managers and became the first certified burn manager in the state of Texas in 2006.  Justin continues to provide leadership in the profession of forestry with state and national advocacy for forest landowners, prescribed burn managers, and professional foresters.  While at A&M, he received the Goodrich-Jones and Rhodes Scholarships for outstanding forestry students and was honored as Texas A&M Forestry Student of the Year in both 1996 and 1997.  He has served as Secretary/Treasurer and Chapter Chair of the Lufkin/Nacogdoches SAF Chapter and was recipient of the National Society of American Foresters Presidential Field Forester Award in 2009.  He is also an Eagle Scout.

Jason Raines, Operations Manager/Forester

Mr. Raines started with Acorn Forestry’s Geospatial Group and was responsible for coordinating all internal and client-based geographic information systems, GPS, and mapping services.  As Operations Manager, he is responsible for coordinating field operations and direct supervision of planting, burning, chemical application and heavy mechanical site preparation activities on approximately 100,000 acres per year. 

Jason works closely with crew supervisors, landowners, subcontractors and other foresters to ensure all jobs meet or exceed customer expectations and are performed in a timely manner.   He continues to assist the Geospatial Group to optimize field operations, improve logistical support, and aid in emergency response activities.  He is the author of multiple publications and presentations, is the SFA Delta Chi Fraternity Alumni Advisor, and is an Eagle Scout.

Rusty Weatherly, Forester

Prior to arriving at Acorn, Rusty was a forestry consultant. He assists in all forest management activities including timber cruising and valuation, timber marking, timber harvest management, and urban tree surveys.

Acorn Forestry a comprehensive, natural resource management, consulting, and forestry services firm headquartered in Lufkin, Texas.  Founded in 1999, we have achieved a highly successful record of developing and executing innovative land management and natural resource solutions.  We manage over 80,000 acres of timberland in 5 states and provide silvicultural services on over 100,000 acres annually for a wide range of institutional, industrial, and private landowners. 

Corporate Experience

Acorn Forestry assists well over 100 clients annually with all facets of forest and natural resource management including timber sales, recreational leases, GIS mapping, site preparation, prescribed burning, and reforestation services.  Our environmental services include wetland delineation and permitting, mitigation banking support services, urban tree and forest health surveys, environmental site assessment, habitat creation and restoration, invasive species control, and soil amelioration.  We also evaluate each site for potential non-timber values such as wetland and conservation banking, pine-straw, sand, gravel, and select fill.  We serve public and private landowners, institutional timberland investors and industrial timberland owners in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.
